Exterior Painting in Vancouver, WA
Protect and enhance your home's exterior with durable, weather-resistant finishes. Siding, trim, fascia and doors on Clark County and Portland-area homes, prepped for a climate that rains for nine months and then bakes for three.
Exterior paint in the Northwest has one enemy, and it is water
Vancouver gets somewhere around forty inches of rain a year, most of it between October and April, and the air stays damp long after the rain stops. Water finds the gap in a caulk line, the crack in a window sill, the bare edge where the last paint job stopped short. It sits behind the paint film, and when the sun finally comes the paint blisters and peels. On the north side of the house, where the siding never fully dries, mildew and moss get a foothold and lift the paint from underneath.
None of that is fixed by a thicker coat. It is fixed by finding the places water gets in, closing them, and painting onto a surface that is clean, dry and sound. That is most of what an exterior job is, and it is the part a cheap bid leaves out.

What we paint outside
- Siding. Fibre cement, lap siding, T1-11 and cedar, washed, scraped to sound paint and primed wherever the surface is bare.
- Trim, fascia and soffits. Corner boards, window and door casings and the eaves, caulked at every joint that can take on water.
- Doors and garage doors. Front doors, side doors and garage doors in a finish that handles sun and weather.
- Decks, railings and porch wood. Painted where paint is right, or stained and sealed where the wood should show.
The prep that decides how long it lasts
Wash and treat
The house is washed to remove dirt, pollen, chalky old paint and the green film the shaded sides grow every winter. Mildew is treated, not just rinsed, and the siding is left to dry fully before anything else happens.
Strip, scrape and sand
We strip failing paint back to a sound surface. Loose and peeling paint is scraped to a firm edge and the edges are feathered with sanding so they do not telegraph through the new coat. Where the old paint has failed across a whole area, it comes off rather than getting buried.
Repair and caulk
Soft or rotted trim is flagged at the estimate and repaired or replaced before paint. Gaps at trim, siding joints and around windows are caulked with a quality exterior sealant so there is nowhere for the rain to go.
Prime, then two coats
Bare wood, repaired areas and chalky surfaces get primer. Then the finish coats go on in the right conditions: dry siding, temperatures inside the product's range, and no coat applied late enough in the day for evening dew to land on it. Houses built before 1978 may have lead in the older layers, which changes how scraping and sanding are handled; we check for it at the estimate.
Working around a short dry season
Exterior painting here runs roughly May through September. The summer weeks book first, so the earlier you call, the more choice you have on timing. Estimates happen year round, rain or not, and the proposal can be ready to go when the weather is.

We are also licensed house painters for Portland, Beaverton and the Oregon suburbs under CCB #262594, which matters more for exteriors than anything else, because Oregon's Construction Contractors Board is where a homeowner checks a painter before letting them put ladders on the house. What decides the price of an exterior paint job
- Size and height. A single-storey ranch and a two-storey with a walkout basement are different amounts of wall, and the second needs more staging.
- Siding type. Fibre cement and smooth lap siding go quickly. Cedar, T1-11 and shingles soak up more primer and more time. Stucco and masonry are their own process.
- The condition of the old paint. A house that is chalking but intact is a wash, scuff and repaint. A house with peeling on three sides is scraping, stripping and priming before any colour goes on, and that is where the hours are.
- Trim and detail. A craftsman with deep eaves, brackets, window grids and a porch has far more edges than a fibre cement box of the same size.
- Repairs. Soft fascia, rotted sills and failed caulk are flagged at the estimate and priced separately, so there are no surprises on paint day.
- Colour and coats. A like-for-like refresh in a similar colour needs less than a change from dark to light or a bold trim colour.

Exterior painting questions
When is exterior painting season in Vancouver, WA?
Roughly May through September. Siding needs to be dry, the air warm enough for the paint to cure, and the night temperature above the product's minimum. September is often the best month: dry, settled and not too hot. Summer slots book first, so call in winter or spring for a summer start. How the season works.
How long does exterior paint last here?
With proper prep and a quality product, many years on most elevations. The south and west sides take the sun and wear first; the north side stays damp and grows mildew. Prep decides the lifespan far more than the brand of paint. The longer answer.
What happens if it rains?
We do not paint in rain or onto a wet surface, and we do not paint late in the day when dew is coming. A rain day moves the schedule and we tell you the same day. In this region that is part of every exterior job, and it is built into the timeline we give you.
Do you paint over moss and mildew?
No. The north and shaded elevations here grow mildew and moss, and painting over them seals the problem in. We wash the house, treat the mildew, let it dry and then paint.
How much does it cost to paint a house exterior in Vancouver, WA?
It depends on size, siding type, how much of the old paint is failing, the amount of trim and any repairs. Prep is the largest part of the price, which is why we only quote after walking the house. The estimate is free, the proposal lists every elevation and step, and most full exteriors qualify for 10% off all qualifying jobs over $2,500.
Do you paint exteriors in Portland and Beaverton?
Yes. We are licensed in Oregon under CCB #262594 and paint exteriors across Portland, Beaverton, Tigard, Tualatin, Sherwood, West Linn, Lake Oswego and Clackamas, with the same wash, scrape, caulk, prime and paint sequence we use in Vancouver. Older Portland houses often have lead in the lower paint layers, and we work lead-safe where it applies.
