The Best Time to Paint a House Exterior in the Pacific Northwest

Exterior paint is only as good as the day it goes on. Here is how the weather in Clark County and the Portland metro decides the schedule.

The short answer is May through September. The longer answer is that the calendar matters less than the conditions on the day the paint goes on, and the week before it, and in this part of the world those conditions are unusually specific.

The siding has to be dry, not just not raining

Between October and April, Vancouver and Portland get most of their forty-odd inches of rain, and the air stays damp between storms. Wood siding soaks that up. Even in a dry week in April, lap siding and trim can hold more moisture than paint will tolerate, and painting over it traps the water behind the film. The result is blistering and peeling a season later. Wood needs to be well below its saturation point before it is painted, and after a wet spring that can take a couple of weeks of genuinely dry weather, not two sunny days.

This is why "the first warm weekend in April" is a trap. The air is warm; the wall is not dry.

Temperature: the surface, not the forecast

Every exterior paint has a minimum application temperature, often around 50°F, and some products go lower. That number applies to the surface and the air, and it has to hold while the paint cures, which runs into the evening. A 62°F May afternoon that drops to 41°F overnight is a marginal painting day. A north-facing wall in shade can be ten degrees cooler than the air around it. We read the wall, not the weather app.

Dew is the quiet problem

From late August on, dew forms early in the evening here, and paint that gets wet before it has set can streak, lose sheen or fail to bond. Exterior work has to finish early enough in the day for each coat to set, and mornings have to wait for the dew to burn off. That shortens the working day at exactly the time of year the weather is otherwise ideal.

Heat is a problem too

July and August bring heat waves, and a wall in full sun at 95°F dries paint too fast. It skins over before it levels, leaves lap marks and loses adhesion. On hot days the work follows the shade around the house: east side in the morning, west side late. It is slower and it is the right way.

So when, exactly?

May and June

Workable once the wood has dried out, with cool nights and the occasional wet week. The famous June gloom is not a painting problem by itself; wet siding is.

July and August

The most reliable months for dry weather and the most popular, which is why they book first. The heat is the thing to manage.

September

Often the best month of the year to paint here. Dry, settled, warm without the heat, and the wood is as dry as it will ever be. The dew comes earlier, so days are shorter. Early October can work in a dry year; by the middle of the month the rain usually returns.

When to call

Summer slots fill first. If you want your house painted in July, call in winter or early spring. That also leaves time for the estimate, colour choices, any HOA approval and any trim repairs that have to happen first. Estimates happen year round, in any weather, and a proposal can sit ready until the siding is dry.

A good painter does not paint in rain or onto a wet surface, and a rain day simply moves the schedule. Expect a few of them in any Northwest summer, and ask how weather days are handled when you book. A month-by-month calendar for Clark County and the Portland metro

  • January to March. Wet, cold, and the siding is saturated. Exterior painting is off. This is estimate season: the water damage is visible, the schedule is open, and a proposal written now holds a summer slot.
  • April. Dry spells start to appear but the wood has not caught up. Doors and sheltered trim on a dry week, repairs and recaulking, colour approvals. Whole elevations wait.
  • May. The season opens once a run of dry days has pulled the moisture out of the siding. South and west walls are ready first; shaded north walls can lag by weeks.
  • June. Reliable on most houses, with the odd wet week. Cool nights still need watching for the product's minimum temperature.
  • July and August. The driest months and the most booked. Heat is the thing to manage, and the work follows the shade around the house.
  • September. Often the best painting month of the year: dry, settled, warm, and the wood as dry as it gets. Days shorten and dew arrives earlier.
  • October. Possible in a dry year through the first week or two. Once the rain settles in, the season is over until spring.

Reading the forecast the way a painter does

A good exterior day in this region has three parts, and the weather app only shows one of them. The first is the days before: a run of dry weather long enough for the siding to give up its moisture, which a moisture meter confirms and a glance does not. The second is the day itself: surface temperature inside the product's range, no rain, and low enough humidity that the coat sets before evening. The third is the night after: no rain and no heavy dew until the coat has cured enough to shrug it off. A forecast that says sunny can fail on the first or the third, which is why a painter who talks about the week rather than the day is the one who has done this before.

East county is its own climate

Camas and Washougal sit at the mouth of the Columbia Gorge, and the east wind that comes through it changes the rules a little. In summer it brings heat and very dry air, which dries siding fast but also dries paint too fast on an exposed wall, so the work moves to the lee side and the mornings. In the shoulder seasons that same wind can dry a house out days ahead of the rest of the county. The tree cover out there has the opposite effect on north walls. The right answer on any given day is still the same: read the wall, not the forecast.

What to do while you wait for the window

Get the estimate done in winter, choose colours in early spring, and get any HOA approval in hand before May. Have rotted trim, failed caulk and loose boards dealt with in a dry week so the house is ready the moment the siding is. Wash the shaded sides in late spring and treat the mildew, because a clean wall dries faster than a green one. Then, when the first real dry stretch arrives, the paint goes on a house that has been waiting for it rather than one that is still being fixed.

Exterior season questions

Can you paint a house exterior in October in Vancouver, WA?

Sometimes, in a dry year, through the first week or two of October. The siding is usually as dry as it will ever be at the end of September, but once the rain settles in the season is over. Dew also forms earlier in the evening by October, which shortens each working day. We would rather hold a job to the following May than paint onto a wet wall.

Is June too wet to paint a house in the Portland area?

Usually not. June has the occasional wet week, but once the siding has dried out after spring it is a workable month on most houses. The thing to watch is cool nights and the product's minimum temperature, and shaded north walls that lag the rest of the house by a few weeks.

Does exterior paint need warm nights to cure?

It needs the surface and the air to stay above the product's minimum temperature, often around 50°F, while the coat cures, and that carries into the evening. A warm afternoon followed by a cold night is a marginal painting day. Dew landing on a coat that has not set can streak it or stop it bonding, which is why work finishes early in the day in late summer.
